Medical notes: 'This child had been vaccinated 2 months before admission in three places on left arm. All became sore in a fortnight and remained open six weeks. There was no history of ‘snuffles’. The mother said she had one other child, which was healthy, but that it had a rash about head and face when about seventeen months old. The mother had frontal headache, but no rash, nor other signs of syphilis. Hair not thin. Father said to have died four months before, from ‘consumption’. Before marriage he had eruption on legs’

The pains much increased on movement. They had been treated as due to sciatica. He had, by reason of the pain, been obliged to take to his bed nine weeks before admission. During the past nine months he had rapidly lost flesh. At the time he took to his bed he had not noticed that he was paralysed and he appeared to be subjectively unaware of his paralysis even on admission. He had noticed for the last 24 hours only some numbness about his genitals and in the feet. He had noticed a little dribbling from the bladder and some difficulty in starting the act of micturition'
