He had considerable oedema and much albumin on admission but steadily improved until when he went out in August he had an oedema and only a faint trace of albumin. In November '97 [1897] he contracted gonorrhoea and on admission again on 3rd Feb 98 [February 1898] he still had a slight gleet. He thought he took a chill on Jan [January] 25 and next morning noticed his face was puffy then his legs began to swell and he was admitted again on Feb [February] 2nd 1898. He was anaemic and had oedema of face, legs, and back, dulness at both bases'

Three weeks ago he noticed that his legs, penis, and scrotum were much swollen, and he also discovered a lump in the right side of his abdomen'

The sputum, at first scanty, became gradually profuse. No pain was complained of and no haemoptysis occurred. She had lost flesh. There was no definite 'specific' history. She had been I.P. [In-patient] here in '96 and '97 [1896 and 1897] for a 'bad leg'. There was nothing of importance in his family history'
