Medical notes: 'This woman, who was a lady’s maid & looked much older than she was, had been seduced some 4 or 5 months ago by a [?] courier. She had been under the treatment of a quack ever since, whether with the object of procuring abortion or no, does not appear. A fortnight before she came in she left this man, & a week ago took some stuff of her own; soon after which, she because very sick, & continued vomiting more or less, & suffering from great pain in the belly, up to the time of her admission, which was at six o’clock in the evening. She was seen by the apothecary & his assistant, & found to be very restless, complaining of pain in her belly, & presenting a very haggard & distressed countenance’
