Class room registers

Group of three registers, the second and third of which are labelled 'Class Room (Pupils) Register / Kingston County Hospital' (a label which also seems to apply to the first, though it is unlabelled) containing records of pupil nurse (? - it is unclear if the pupil/student distinction is being made here) training, with alphabetical indexes at the front. Each record includes the following information: name, age, date of entry/leaving, dates and results of examinations, remarks, and number of lectures attended (broken down by subject).

The date ranges of the volumes are as follows:

Battersea and Bolingbroke student registers

Registers of student nurses at the Battersea and Bolingbroke Hospitals Combined Training School (in practice most of them seem to have been based at Bolingbroke: Battersea is sometimes listed as an affiliation), with alphabetical indexes at the front. The record for each student includes the following information: name, age, date of birth, nationality, religion, education, date of entry/commencement of training, date of signing, affiliated hospital, certificates held, previous nursing experience, sickness, sick leave, lectures attended, examinations, date of leaving, and remarks. Later items of correspondence relating to references/transcripts have been inserted, sometimes including original student record cards.

The date ranges for the volumes are as follows:

1939-1953 [missing cover; first page is detached]
1953-1958 [misleadingly labelled 'St James' on cover, presumably because it was later transferred to St James' Hospital]
1958-1961 ['Bolingbroke Students']
1961-1965 ['Bolingbroke Students']
1965-1967

Royal Hospital student nurse registers

Registers of student nurse records, including the following information: name, index number, age/date of birth, date of entry/leaving, address, education, religion, previous experience, number of lectures attended, and exam results.

The date ranges of the volumes are as follows:

Observation charts

Set of 10 boards (and one piece of card) with patient observation charts – recording temperature, pulse rate, and respiration – affixed to one or both sides. Six of the boards have additional labels stating the disease of the patient (e.g. scarlet fever, smallpox, typhoid, miliary tuberculosis, etc.), indicating that they were used to illustrate characteristic temperature patterns.

Examination registers

Registers relating to nursing (and in some cases midwifery) examinations at Kingston. The registers take a variety of formats: some record only lists of names with pass or failure; some include details of individual marks; and some include lists of exam questions or copies of printed exam papers.

Apr 1940 – Jun 1960 ['Training of Midwives – Part II / General Nursing Council Examination Results']

  • Armour's Sterilised Surgical Suture (Silk Worm Gut, Medium) [also labelled 'Ligature' on outer packaging], manufactured by Armour Pharmaceutical Company, Eastbourne

The records vary in form: those in the first volume include only name, age, dates of ward experience and leave, and dates of exam passes and any prizes; those in the remaining volumes also include address, index number, next of kin, religion, and remarks (but omit the ward experience details).

The date ranges of the volumes are as follows:

1940-1960 [note that this binder is in a larger format than the other three]
