Medical notes: 'This patient stated that on the 12th of August, being at the time in good health, he was suddenly seized with rigors, most acute pain in the abdomen and vomiting; that his belly soon became lympanitic and extremely painful on the slightest pressure, and that though he had been bled and his mouth had become sore from the medicine taken, yet that he was in no way relieved. It was elicited, that about two years ago he had a severe fall, but since the subsidence of the immediate consequences, he had in no way suffered from it’
