Medical notes: The patient began at the end of the previous year to suffer from pains in the back and loins which prevented his sitting down. He then had a fit and with loss of consciousness. When admitted he compained of pain across the forehead and of tenderness in the lower part of the dorsal region. Both hands occasionally became numb, and appeared deficient in power. Both legs were in the same condition.
