Medical notes: 'A single woman who had always enjoyed good health & had led a laborious life. A fortnight before admission she first had difficulty in making water, then pain came on in the lower part of the back, but there was no vaginal discharge. However after she had been in the hospital two days yellowish vaginal discharge appeared & was accompanied by lassitude & aching in all her limbs. A hard mass was felt in the left iliac & hypogastric regions which was not tender to the touch & was immovable’
