Lecture registers

Two registers (for 1930-1944 and 1945-1951) of nurses' attendance at lectures and revision classes, including details of topics and names of lecturers

Training records: D-H

Training records for nurses who entered St James' Hospital in the 1930s-1950s, arranged alphabetically by surname (D-H).

The records are written on a London County Council 'Nursing Service – Record of Training' form (though by 1950 the heading had changed to Wandsworth Hospital Group) and include the following information: name, date of birth, marital status, parents'/guardian's address, education, dates of training and leaving (or transfer to other hospitals), lecture attendance, examination marks, dates of leave, details of wards worked on, and ward reports. They sometimes have additional documents inserted, including photographs and correspondence relating to requests for references/transcripts.

Solo/duo portraits

Black and white and colour portrait photographs of nurses and doctors, either solo or in pairs, including head shots of matron Dorothy Morris, surgeon David Caro and 'Mr Alexander', and a series of photos featuring a male and a female student nurse (A. J. Neary and M. A. Vento) that according to one of the labels was taken for use in a promotional brochure (c.1973). Some of the images are mounted or printed on board.

Official visits and events

Black and white (and a few colour) photographs of official visits and events, including visits by Queen Elizabeth II to Hyde Park Corner in 1962 and to the opening of the Tooting site in 1980, visits by the Duchess of Kent and other royals, Christmas/formal dinners and parties (including copies of a set of photographs taken at Christmas on the maternity wards in 1949), the opening of a garden dedicated to Grace Hickie in 1987 (with photocopy of a letter about the event), etc.

Many of the photographs have press copyright stamps on the reverse.

Press cuttings about Powell

Press cuttings about or referring to Muriel Powell, including reports on public appearances and pronouncements, honours, etc., some with photographs. The earliest item – 'Two Girl Guides Save Curate' (Daily Mirror, 10 Jul 1933) – refers to a 'Gertrude Powell', but this was apparently Muriel; the other girl guide was Mary Gliddon (see Nurses' Voices interview, NU/7/2/42).

Sou' West Fore magazine

Issues of Sou' West Fore, 'The Magazine of the South London Hospital for Women', which was apparently published to raise money for an extension fund, and contained articles about the hospital alongside literary contributions. Includes nos 1 (Summer 1934), 3 (Summer 1935), 4 (Christmas 1935), 5 (Summer 1936), 6 (Christmas 1936), 7 (Summer 1937), and 11 (Sept 1972).
