Medical notes: 'This patient presented on admission the appearance of approaching mania or insanity rather than delirium. She could give very little account of herself, and yet seemed fully to understand the questions put to her, put out her tongue, sat up in bed &c just as she was ordered. She was reported by her friends to be a married woman, having had 3 children, with easy labours, & 4 miscarriages since, the last of which occurring about Xmas was attended with a good deal of flooding, and she had continued to have a red discharge more or less ever since. When at chapel on 25th inst. she created a disturbance by talking incoherently; she has been strange in her manner ever since, and occasionally very noisy & troublesome’

Her face was pale & puffy, and she said was occasionally very much swelled; the legs & feet were very much swelled, and the abdomen was distended, chiefly with flatus, but giving also distinct fluctuation’
