The pains much increased on movement. They had been treated as due to sciatica. He had, by reason of the pain, been obliged to take to his bed nine weeks before admission. During the past nine months he had rapidly lost flesh. At the time he took to his bed he had not noticed that he was paralysed and he appeared to be subjectively unaware of his paralysis even on admission. He had noticed for the last 24 hours only some numbness about his genitals and in the feet. He had noticed a little dribbling from the bladder and some difficulty in starting the act of micturition'
