Medical notes: 'This young woman had had pain and swelling in the left hand, which was believed to be rheumatic, for a week before admission. This could not be traced to any injury but appeared to have been the result of exposure to cold. She admitted indeed, after many leading questions and much cross-examination, that about a fortnight previously she had pricked her hand with a pin but there did not appear to be any reason for connecting this with the present swelling’
