Work scenes and hospital buildings

Black and white (and a few colour) photographs of nurses and other hospital staff working and studying in wards, classrooms, etc., as well as hospital buildings and equipment, including canteens, physiotherapy rooms, the chapel (including an image of the Saint James stained glass window and a textual description of the Nurses' Window), a waiting room, operating theatres, etc. Also includes a photo of nurses being evacuated (c.1940) with accompanying correspondence from the donor and Heather Bond.

Prizegiving ceremonies

Black and white (and a few colour) photographs of prizegiving ceremonies (and presentations of certificates) at St James' Hospital, including shots of nurses collecting prizes, speeches being made, and groups of attendees dressed up for the occasion. Also includes discrete booklet and 'Nursing Times Photographs' wallet containing photos for the 1961 and 1963 prizegivings respectively.

Official visits and events

Black and white photographs of official visits and events at St James' Hospital, including the opening of the new outpatients department by the Earl of Onslow (1953), Christmas pantomimes/shows (including one called 'Topical Cinderella'), leaving parties for Miss Louden and Miss Savoy, mayoral visits, a beauty contest, etc. Other named figures include Dr Frankenberg, Sister Lester, Mrs Robinson, and Miss Bishop.

Personal photographs

Miscellaneous personal/portrait photographs of people connected to St George's, including Sister Chapman, Sister Bryant ('looking at Coronation Procession from Drummond Ward'), and Dame Helen Cargill, as well as personal photographs of a 1953 rugby tour (presumably the St George's team?) and a visit of St George's students to Battersea Park Fun Fair.

Tennis/swimming photographs

Black and white photographs (with press copyright stamps on the reverse) of nurses playing tennis or holding tennis trophies (including one shot featuring matron Muriel Powell). Also includes one photograph of a nurses' swimming team in a pool.

Hospital buildings and work scenes

Black and white (and a few colour) photographs of hospital/nursing school buildings and wards at Hyde Park Corner and Tooting (and possibly other sites?), including scenes of nurses at work or taking breaks. Includes shots of the St George's chapel, the School of Nursing entrance and library, Clare House nurses' home, hospital equipment, operating theatres, classrooms, pathology labs, etc.

Most of these photographs date from the mid-twentieth century, but one is a copy of an image from 1898, and two are printed on postcards from the 1900s (one with writing on the reverse). Note that it is possible that some images of other hospitals have been mixed in with the St George's ones.

Prizegiving ceremonies

Black and white and colour photographs (and some colour contact sheets) of prizegiving ceremonies, featuring nurses receiving prizes/certificates/medals from various dignitaries, including the Duchess of Kent. Most of the photographs have press copyright stamps on the reverse.

Official visits and events

Black and white (and a few colour) photographs of official visits and events, including visits by Queen Elizabeth II to Hyde Park Corner in 1962 and to the opening of the Tooting site in 1980, visits by the Duchess of Kent and other royals, Christmas/formal dinners and parties (including copies of a set of photographs taken at Christmas on the maternity wards in 1949), the opening of a garden dedicated to Grace Hickie in 1987 (with photocopy of a letter about the event), etc.

Many of the photographs have press copyright stamps on the reverse.

Jean Meadows photo album

Album labelled 'Career' containing photographs featuring or relating to St George's nurse Jean Meadows (née Veronica Jean Cruise), including scenes of nurses, wards, Christmas festivities, royal visits, etc. Also includes press cuttings about visits by two different Duchesses of Kent (Princess Marina and Katharine) and an inserted certificate of completion of the St George's tuberculosis nursing course (1957).
