He had enjoyed good health, except for a slight attack of ‘pleurisy' on the left side about the middle of 1890. He had had no previous rheumatism. On June 7th 1891 in the afternoon he found that he had pain in the legs. This became rapidly severe and extended to the wrists so that the same evening he could not undress himself. He was henceforth confined to bed, and on June 9th was treated with medicine by a doctor'

He was a free drinker. On Jan 2nd he had an attack of shivering and stitch on the left side. He took to bed at one, but had no medical attendance, and, as he thought, gradually improved'

These gastric symptoms abated; the appetite remained fair, and solid food was not always vomited. But constant pain in the upper abdomen became a prominent symptom and she lost flesh & strength rapidly. The catamenia [menstruation] were irregular, sometimes scanty, sometimes profuse; no large menorrhagia had taken place'

It is probable that he was not a hard drinker. For 8 or 9 years he had been aware of a pulsating swelling in the right groin, which gave him no inconvenience though it increased in size slowly'

At the time mentioned the lower extremities became oedematous, and a fortnight later the eyelids were swollen. She felt as though in perfect health but sought advice at this hospital on account of the swelling'

No particular attention was attracted to the patient, and it was not till some days later that a more complete examination led to a diagnosis of aortic aneurism'

When about 28 years old her right breast was amputated for a tumour which was thought to be cancerous: there was a good recovery and no recurrence of the disease. For the last 5 or 6 years she had been liable to slight rheumatic pains; and in the winter of 1890-1 she had two attacks of bronchitis and began to be troubled by palpitation and shortness of breath. For 3 weeks before her first admission she had been confined to bed at Sutton with shooting pains in the limbs and abdomen, and a local medical man was led to diagnose cancer of the liver'

During the winter of 1890-1 he had a slight attack of rheumatism or gout in the right wrist, but he recovered perfectly and remained quite free from cough or any other symptoms of phthisis till 3 weeks before admission when slight haemoptysis began. On the morning of June 25th he coughed up a considerable quantity of blood, but did not feel the worse'

Medical notes: 'This man was a baker but since April 1891 he had not worked, having been laid up at that time by severe illness in some hospital or infirmary. In June he was able to walk away and was lost sight of by his relations. On the day of his death he spent some hours lying upon the grass in Hyde Park in the company of a casual acquaintance. He complained of feeling unwell, and in particular had no appetite. While on the grass he blacked his own and his companions boots and made a slight alteration in his dress. Upon rising to go, having walked a very few years, he fell to the ground with a cry of pain, pressing his hands to the front of the chest. He became ‘black as jet' in the face and died very speedily, before he could be brought to this hospital'
