Medical notes: Apparently of sound constitution, he enjoyed good health till the last year, when, from an attack of pleurisy, he continued to cough slightly and to be short of breath. For four or five months he had suffered from pain about the sacrum and right buttock, extending down the sciatic nerve on coughing, from anorexia and constipation.

Medical notes: '[Died at Atkinson Morley Convalescent Hospital]. Patient was admitted on March 7th and was sent to A.M.C.H. [Atkinson Morley Convalescent Hospital] on the next day. He had had cough and expectoration for four years also dyspnoea. Haemoptysis twice. He had also had some diarrhoea. His symptoms had remained stationary for some time before admission and he had not been rapidly losing weight. One of his brothers had died of haemorrhage from the lungs. He was a moderately well nourished man with medium hair and brown eyes, of a pallid countenance. The mucous membranes showed the presence of decided anaemia. There was no active dyspnoea or distress as he lay in bed. The cough was paroxysmal and there was abundant muco-purulent expectoration tinged with blood. The fingers were clubbed'
