Since 1878 had suffered from winter cough, general debility &c, but never noticed anything the matter with him till 3 months before his admission into St George's in October 1880. He then whilst swimming suddenly felt a crampy pain and numbness of the right lower extremity. On examining this he perceived a swelling as big as a walnut in the groin. This which proved to be an abscess burst and in Sept 1880 he first experienced pain of a dull aching character in his back'
