Training records: 1954-1955

Records of training undertaken by nurses at the Grove between 1954 and 1955 (specified on some of the records as 'fever training'). Note that by this time the Grove had become a branch of St George's Hospital, and so was no longer recruiting nurses independently.

Ward work registers

Alphabetical registers recording nurses' training experience on the hospital's wards. Each individual record includes name, dates of commencement and leaving, and lists of wards/departments worked on (with dates).

The date ranges for the volumes are as follows:

1943-1951 [includes inserted copy of letter from 1976]
1951-1955
1952-1956
1955-1960

Training records: A-C

Training records for nurses who entered St James' Hospital in the 1930s-1950s, arranged alphabetically by surname (A-C).

The records are written on a London County Council 'Nursing Service – Record of Training' form (though by 1950 the heading had changed to Wandsworth Hospital Group) and include the following information: name, date of birth, marital status, parents'/guardian's address, education, dates of training and leaving (or transfer to other hospitals), lecture attendance, examination marks, dates of leave, details of wards worked on, and ward reports. They sometimes have additional documents inserted, including photographs and correspondence relating to requests for references/transcripts.

School intake lists

Typed lists of student and pupil nurses at St James', arranged in reverse chronological order by year of intake. Each list is accompanied with an additional sheet recording the following information about each student: name, date of birth, age, educational qualifications (left blank after 1972), previous nursing experience, nationality (note that 'British' and 'English' are both used), country of origin, year of leaving, date of leaving, and reason for leaving.

Pupil nurse registers

Registers of pupil nurses' lecture attendance and test marks. Each register also includes an annotated class photograph.

The date ranges of the volumes are as follows:

May 1976 – May 1978 ['Group W']
Jul 1978 – Jul 1980
Oct 1978 – Oct 1980 ['Group G']
Apr 1979 – Oct 1980 ['Group I']
Jul 1979 – Jan 1981 ['Group J']
Jul 1980 – Jan 1982 ['Group N']
Oct 1980 – Apr 1982 [contains inserted copy of Nursing Times article on 'How to write a case study']

Training records for nurses who entered St James' Hospital in the 1930s-1950s, arranged alphabetically by surname (D-H).

Training records: I-M

Training records for nurses who entered St James' Hospital in the 1930s-1950s, arranged alphabetically by surname (I-M).

Training records: N-Y

Training records for nurses who entered St James' Hospital in the 1930s-1950s, arranged alphabetically by surname (N-Y).

Battersea and Bolingbroke student registers

Registers of student nurses at the Battersea and Bolingbroke Hospitals Combined Training School (in practice most of them seem to have been based at Bolingbroke: Battersea is sometimes listed as an affiliation), with alphabetical indexes at the front. The record for each student includes the following information: name, age, date of birth, nationality, religion, education, date of entry/commencement of training, date of signing, affiliated hospital, certificates held, previous nursing experience, sickness, sick leave, lectures attended, examinations, date of leaving, and remarks. Later items of correspondence relating to references/transcripts have been inserted, sometimes including original student record cards.

The date ranges for the volumes are as follows:

1939-1953 [missing cover; first page is detached]
1953-1958 [misleadingly labelled 'St James' on cover, presumably because it was later transferred to St James' Hospital]
1958-1961 ['Bolingbroke Students']
1961-1965 ['Bolingbroke Students']
1965-1967

Putney/Bolingbroke student record cards

Loose record cards (originally stored in a filing system) relating to student nurses at Putney and Bolingbroke hospitals (and possibly others: the cards mention periods of secondment to hospitals including St James', St Benedict's [Tooting], St John's [Battersea], and Weir Maternity) who trained between 1959 and 1970, arranged alphabetically by surname. Each record includes the following information: name, address, date and place of birth, index number, religion, next of kin, education, school leaving age, previous experience, dates of entry and completion/leaving, examination results, number of lectures attended, dates of leave, and dates of ward work.

Items of correspondence relating to requests for references (or applications for shortened periods of training from the General Nursing Council) are sometimes stapled to the cards.

Nurses' registers

Group of four registers (the first with its original label missing and the other three labelled 'Nurses' Register') recording details about student nurses including name, age/date of birth, religion, marital status, index number, date of entry, previous nursing experience, education, previous occupation, home address, and form of application. A few later items of correspondence have been inserted.

The date ranges of the volumes are as follows:

May 1947 – Oct 1962 [the information recorded in this alphabetical register – inaccurately labelled 'Register 1949-1954' - is more minimal than the later three, including only name, index number, and dates of entry/assessment/qualification or reason for discontinuation; the overlap in content indicates that it was used in tandem with the others to record completion/leaving dates]
Jan 1950 – Oct 1955
Nov 1955 – May 1961
Jun 1961 – Feb 1962
