Medical notes: 'One month before admission patient had a fall from a scaffolding and injured his lower ribs. He had not resumed work. Eight weeks ago he had an attack of griping abdominal pain. Obstruction is said to have come on acutely 48 hours before admission – an action of the bowels however was obtained shortly before coming to the Hospital as the result of an enema. At the onset there was profuse vomiting with the sudden onset of pain in the upper abdomen. The vomiting continued with hiccough'
