Medical notes: 'This patient, a chimney sweep by trade, was admitted with a cancerous ulcer situated on the right side & lower part of the scrotum. About 3 years before, there first appeared, in the situation now occupied by the ulcer, a small warty excrescence which enlarged very slowly & without pain. This in about two years began to ulcerate, but as it gave him no inconvenience he did not seek medical aid. In the course of another three months a gland in the right groin began to enlarge and finally wen on to ulceration’

He had been a pretty free drinker, having been employed at a distillery, and in the beginning his complaint appears to have been occasional attacks of spasmodic stricture, but for the last four months there had been some permanent difficulty in micturition’

Medical notes: 'This woman, the mother of 6 children, was admitted with encephaloid disease of the left breast. It appears that 4 days after her last confinement 6 months prior to her admission, the breast became inflamed & an abscess formed, which broke at the end of a month, & discharged pus copiously. At the end of 6 or 7 weeks it healed & a similar abscess formed in the right breast. The child was then reapplied to the left breast & the flow of milk again became established, but ulceration taking place around the nipple continuing to increase, the child at length refused to suckle. A few days after the child was weaned, some hard lumps were discovered at the lower part of the gland, which gradually increased in size without much pain. She was then seized with rheumatic fever, acute in the befinningm but subsequently chronic’
