Medical notes: 'He had indulged for many years in occasional bouts of hard drinking. No history of lead poisoning (he had been a silver polisher for 20 years) or of syphilis. About Sep 1881 he noticed some abdominal swelling followed by oedema of the legs. He was treated at St Bartholomew's Hospital & the abdomen tapped three times, he says, without improvement. He was discharged from St Bartholomew's five days before admission'
