Medical notes: 'This patient was admitted with an extensive lacerated wound over the dorsum of the foot caused by a cart wheel passing over it. There was considerable haemorrhage from some of the small arteries at the time and it was subsequently ascertained that one of the metatarsal bones was fractured and a portion of the base separated from the remainder of the bone’
