St George's Hospital Nurses Signatures

Volume containing nurses' signatures, pledging to 'abide by the Rules of the Hospital relating to my office'. Printed sets of rules are attached to the pages, with different lists for each category of nurse (head nurses, night nurses, ward nurses, etc).

Student register

Register of students who entered the South London Hospital for Women and Children from 1942-1952, with an alphabetical index at the front. Information recorded includes name, address, dates of entry and leaving, examination pass/failure, and sometimes subsequent employment. A diagram of a human skeleton (apparently taken from a magazine) has been inserted into the front of the volume.

The spine of the register is incorrectly labelled 'St James', presumably because it was later transferred there. Note that there is seemingly no explicit reference to the South London Hospital anywhere in the volume: its provenance has been inferred from cross-referencing the names of students with those mentioned in publications of the SLH Nurses' League (see NU/5/55/6), who do not appear in St James' records from the same period; note also that the records sometimes refer to separate 'Male Nursing' training at the South Western Hospital (Stockwell), something that would not have been necessary at a mixed-gender hospital.

Lecture Room Register

Register labelled 'Lecture Room Register' containing records of nursing student lecture attendance, with an alphabetical index at the front. Each record includes the following information: name, age, date of 19th birthday, dates of entry and leaving, number of lectures attended (listed by subject), marks gained, and dates certificates were awarded (preliminary, final, CMB [Central Midwives Board]). In some cases the original name has been overlaid with a paper strip featuring a different name.

St George's School of Nursing stock book

Notebook labelled 'Stock Book' containing inventories of classroom and office equipment at No 7, Knightsbridge (the address of St George's Hospital School of Nursing), divided up by location or type (e.g. instruments, glassware, linen). The written date range of the book is 1948-1965, but it also contains a taped-in receipt from 1932 and numerous loose inserted documents including lists of missing equipment and a typed list of 'Equipment taken from 7 Knightsbridge to the Grove Hospital in Apr 1960'.

Mary Abbott

St George's Hospital training record booklet for nurse Mary O. Abbott (not to be confused with Mary Lee Abbott)

Pneumothorax apparatus

Portable artificial pneumothorax apparatus (aka 'Maxwell's Box') produced by the Genito-Urinary Manufacturing Company, London, consisting of a wooden carrying box containing pump, regulating valve, manometer, filter, and fragments of broken rubber tubing.

This device was used to induce an artificial pneumothorax (collapsed lung) in tuberculosis patients by injecting gas into the pleural cavity, with the aim of 'resting' the lung so that it could heal more easily.

The illustrated receipt contains printed inscription ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’

Catalogue of the Pathological Museum of St George’s Hospital, eds. John William Ogle and Timothy Holmes

This catalogue reflects the original arrangement of the museum. The classification of specimens by disease is said to have been partially based on a scheme by Henry Gray; the original arrangement by Gray does not however survive.
