Lecture registers

Registers of student attendance at lectures/study days, including summaries of lecture topics. The registers cover sets of students from different year groups and courses (e.g. '1st year psychiatry'; '2nd year medicine'), including graduate entrants and students on secondment from St James' and St George's hospitals (the latter sometimes on the joint course then offered with the University of Surrey).

The date ranges of the volumes are as follows:

Apr 1971 – Dec 1973
Sep 1973 – Sep 1975 ['Register of lectures']
Apr 1975 – Jan 1978 ['Students']
Sep 1977 – Aug 1980 ['Students register']

St James' and related hospitals

Set of alphabetical files containing correspondence relating to requests for references/transcripts – often for the purpose of registration in North America – from nurses who trained at St James' Hospital or others that were incorporated into the South West London Hospitals Group School of Nursing (subsequently the St George's District School of Nursing), including the South London, Bolingbroke, and St Benedict's. Copies of transcripts and original training records are sometimes enclosed.

St George's District School of Nursing

Includes two versions of a full-colour prospectus for the expanded St George's District School of Nursing (which had by the 1980s incorporated St James' and Bolingbroke hospitals) and a comb-bound paper booklet about the '16-18 Caring Scheme' run jointly with South West London College.

The 1989 School of Nursing prospectus discusses Project 2000, a scheme within which trainee nurses would be given 'full student status similar to students in universities, polytechnics and colleges'.

Event programmes and menus

Includes:

  • programmes for St George's Day/Eve evensong services, 1949-1956
  • programme for London vs St George's Hospital Cup rugby match, 15 Feb 1951
  • programme for Fitzwilliam Lodge Ladies' Festival, 15 Mar 1951
  • programme for Procession with Carols in King's College Chapel (Cambridge, 2 Dec 1951

Press cuttings

Press cuttings relating to Joan Knock's completion of the Diploma in Nursing (some 20 years after she had originally trained as a nurse at St George's), including a local news item from a Bath paper (with photograph) and examination pass lists from the Nursing Mirror and Nursing Times (1962)

Diaries

Five official Stationery Office appointment diaries for the years 1970, 1971, 1973, 1974, and 1975, coinciding with Powell's tenure as Chief Nursing Officer for Scotland (following her departure from St George's). The diaries contain lists of appointments mainly relating to her work in Scotland.

Articles on euthanasia

Group of nine articles/papers on the subject of euthanasia (mostly reprints for Documentation in Medical Ethics), written from both medical and religious perspectives

Book reviews/coverage

Promotional press cuttings and transcribed reviews of Powell's book 'Patients are People' (1975), as well a single press cutting about 'Called to Serve' (1952), the book she co-wrote with Paul Gliddon

Orations and tributes

Copies of funeral orations and tribute speeches about Powell by Rev. Colin Mynell, Rev. Canon Norman Autton, Doreen Norton (published in an issue of History of Nursing Society Journal, 1992), John Greene (typescript and published version in same journal as Norton's), and Terry Gould (read out at 1989 ward naming)

  • Battersea-Bolingbroke & Putney School of Nursing [blank certificate, 2 copies], nd
  • Joint Scheme of Training for Nurses at the Uxbridge Union Hospital and the Kingston & District Hospital [certificate for nurse Dorothy Beesley], 9 Aug 1927
  • Royal Hospital, Richmond [blank certificate], nd
  • St George's District School of Nursing [blank certificate of pupil nurse training], nd

Also includes a hand-lettered heraldic description of the borough arms of Sutton and Cheam, which were incorporated into the training school badge of Sutton Hospital (nd, but c.1934-1965, when the municipal borough of Sutton and Cheam existed).

Enrolled nurse group photographs

Black and white (and a few colour) group photographs of sets of enrolled (pupil) nurses, many of which are annotated with names or numbers. That these are pictures of pupil nurses has been inferred from the fact that most of them were previously stored in a plastic folder labelled 'Photos of SEN [Student Enrolled Nurse] sets having completed 2 year course', although by the late 1980s the student/pupil distinction seems to have blurred.

Experimental course registers

Registers relating to the 'New Experiment in Nursing Education', aka the 'experimental course', which ran for a few years in the mid-1960s, and attempted to give the nursing curriculum a more systematic theoretical foundation based on the human life course (paediatrics, obstetrics, geriatrics, etc). It subsequently evolved into the '2+1' course (see NU/1/1/21).

The registers record student attendance at lectures, tutorials, visits, clinical conferences, study days, etc (including psychiatric nursing training at Atkinson Morley and West Park hospitals), as well as examination results. The date ranges and titles of the registers are as follows:

Nov 1965 – Sep 1967 ['New Experiment in Nursing Education']
Sep 1966 – Apr 1968 ['Record of Nursing Tutorials – Experimental Course']
Nov 1966 – Jul 1968 ['New Experiment in Nursing Education: Group II']
Nov 1967 – Oct 1969 ['Experimental Course']
