Correspondence relating to the commemoration of Muriel Powell, much of it addressed to her sister Winifred Pickthorne. Correspondents include Terry Gould, Doreen Norton, Cecily Wade, Heather Bond (on behalf of the Nurses' League), etc. Also includes a few letters from a Mary [surname not mentioned] from 1977 (i.e. before Powell's death), an annotated catalogue of the contents of Powell's house (1979, two copies), and information about an appeal from the Alzheimer's Disease Society (1982).

Contains papers from the Croydon Alcohol Interventions Project.

Set up in c.2008 through social inclusion funding, the aim of the project was to develop a programme of training on screening and brief interventions on alcohol for staff in Accident & Emergency settings at the Mayday Hospital, including the minor injuries unit and relevant mental health wards at the Bethlem Royal Hospital as used by Croydon residents; GP practices and health care staff.

The main activities of the project were as follows:

· To identify, assess, and gather data on the training needs of key health staff in GP Surgeries, Accident and Emergency/Minor Injuries Unit and Mental Health inpatient wards at Mayday Hospital.

· To deliver appropriate training packages and support for health professionals specified above on brief interventions and screening for people at risk from alcohol harm.

· To develop knowledge of the impact of alcohol upon specific diseases and specialities, such as pregnancy, liver disease, violence, and accidents

· To advise on appropriate tools and other resources for use in screening in a variety of settings, including the prioritising of medical and psychosocial problems associated with alcohol misuse.

· To build capacity for local training to be undertaken within Croydon’s Health structures.

With increased identification of alcohol misuse and the delivery of brief interventions for alcohol users within GP practices, A & E and wards, it was anticipated that this would have an impact on the workflow within A&E.

Includes photographs of groups of student nurses, prizegiving ceremonies, and an aerial shot of hospital buildings. Also includes a letter from photographer John G. Rimell (dated 23 Apr 1971), who took some of the prizegiving photos.

Most of these images have press copyright stamps on the reverse.

Five official Stationery Office appointment diaries for the years 1970, 1971, 1973, 1974, and 1975, coinciding with Powell's tenure as Chief Nursing Officer for Scotland (following her departure from St George's). The diaries contain lists of appointments mainly relating to her work in Scotland.

Typed display labels (about nurse training at St George's, Muriel Powell, Florence Nightingale, etc.) apparently created for a display relating to the project, with two pages of handwritten comments from visitors responding to the display

Group of laminated information sheets and photocopies of press cuttings about Powell, mostly apparently used in a commemorative display about her in 2004

Set of three ring binders containing outlines of 'district procedures' (i.e. for the Wandsworth and East Merton District Health Authority), both medical (e.g. 'Cardiac Arrest', 'Temperature (taking of)') and administrative (e.g. 'Patients' Property', 'Deceased Patients (Last Offices)'), arranged alphabetically (C-G, H-R, and S-W) and separated with dividers. Some relate to specific hospitals (St George's; Springfield). Each entry includes lists of 'dangers/special points and related action', principles, equipment, and 'key points'.

The spines of two of the binders are labelled 'District Procedures: Spares', indicating that multiple copies of these documents were kept for reference by hospital staff.
