Medical notes: 'Sixteen years before he came to the hospital he had some serious illness, the nature of which is not clear. He said it was ‘enlargement of the liver and inflammation of the kidneys’. He was in bed for 6 or 8 weeks: oedema of the legs was a prominent symptom. Eighteen months before his admission he began to suffer from pricking pain at the lower part of his abdomen on the left side. A swelling was soon afterwards noticed at the seat of the pain’
