Medical notes: 'No history of tubercle amongst relations. This child, fed always by hand, but, apparently, in a proper manner, without previous signs of syphilis or of rickets, had been wasting for over a year - with cough of late, without any hooping or vomiting, and diarrhoea for the last 6 months - but not severe during the last 3 months. On admission (March 5) the child was anaemic, thin, cold, with marked depression of the anterior fontanelle; suffering from cough, but not in any distress'
