Medical notes: 'The boy had suffered from otorrhoea on or off all his life. This had become much worse for the past 2 or 3 weeks and in the last day or so an acute inflammatory swelling had appeared in the neck. When admitted a gangrenous polypus filled the L. [Left] ext [external] auditory meatus. There was much offensive discharge. In the L. [Left] side of the neck below and in front of the mastoid was a large brawny mass, red, tender, and oedematous'
