No particular attention was attracted to the patient, and it was not till some days later that a more complete examination led to a diagnosis of aortic aneurism'

Medical notes: 'Not seen by the registrar. This man had been a very hard drinker for many years, and sometimes he would sit in a public-house for the whole day. He had had more than one attack of delirium tremens. He was not known ever to have had rheumatism or acute inflammatory illness. He was employed at Tattersalls as an attendant of horses. For eight months he had been short of breath and much troubled by oedema of the legs. At 2.20am on June 7th he was left in his room having come home drunk. Nothing more was known about him till late on June 8th when the door was forced open and he was found lying insensible. He was thereupon brought to this hospital'

Medical notes: 'History. Weakly subject: appetite never good: disgust to fat: 'inflammation of lungs' at 21: coughs every winter as long as she remembered. Nothing else remarkable in the previous history: no previous miscarriages (5 children born alive). 'Weight' at epigastrium after food for some 6 months. Cough commenced in October as usual and continues as usual. 11 ½ weeks before admn [admission], the appetite failed. Three or four days later the cough somewhat suddenly became severe, and was accompanied by pain about the back and shoulders, increased by breathing. From that time she lost flesh, sweated profusely at night, and suffered from headache about three days out of each week. The pain disappeared before admn [admission]. (No haemoptysis)'
