On the next day there were well-marked signs of a left pneumothorax, During the next fortnight signs of ascites developed and the left chest seemed partially to be refilled with fluid'

Medical notes: 'History. Weakly subject: appetite never good: disgust to fat: 'inflammation of lungs' at 21: coughs every winter as long as she remembered. Nothing else remarkable in the previous history: no previous miscarriages (5 children born alive). 'Weight' at epigastrium after food for some 6 months. Cough commenced in October as usual and continues as usual. 11 ½ weeks before admn [admission], the appetite failed. Three or four days later the cough somewhat suddenly became severe, and was accompanied by pain about the back and shoulders, increased by breathing. From that time she lost flesh, sweated profusely at night, and suffered from headache about three days out of each week. The pain disappeared before admn [admission]. (No haemoptysis)'
