There were Bronchitic sounds scattered thr [through] both lungs, but no evidence of consolidation'

He spoke once or twice about half an hour after the first attack, saying that he felt better but subsequently relapsed with further convulsions into complete coma which soon became stertorous'

Medical notes: 'History. Father died of consumption. Smallpox 12 yrs [years] before admission. Subject to occipital headaches: experienced pain if he held his water for long. Venereal sore 14 yrs [years] ago: suppurating bubo: no constitutional manifestations. Took about 1 ½ pt [pint] of beer daily. Epistaxis. 15 mo. [months] before admn [admission]; - severe epistaxis for 12 hours: laid up with consequent weakness for five weeks. Hemiplegia. On July 3rd 1877; while carrying a piece of pipe in his L. [Left] hand, he found he kept dropping it without his knowledge: after about ½ hour his legs have way and he fell. He was taken to a medical man and sent home in a cab: paralysis of L. [Left] arm, leg and side of face found to be present: shortly after he became insensible and remained so for an hour or two. Next morning his eyesight was gone'
