Medical notes: 'History. No heritable disease in the family. Rheumatic fever 15 yrs [years] before adm [admission]: scarlatina in childhood. Health otherwise good. Averaged 5 pts [pints] of beer and 1 glass of gin daily. Thirty three days before admn [admission] he got wet (not an unusual thing). In the evening pain appeared in the loins, which continued. On the third day the face was found to puffy, and the urine dark. On 4th or 5th the lumbar pain receded and the legs swelled: face became less puffy. About the 6th the abdomen swelled and became somewhat painful: He laid up. The swelling of the legs slowly increased; the urine became lighter: the bowels were very costive. Slight cough and loss of appetite for 3 days before admission'

[months] the pain left her: the other symptoms persisted. She lost flesh from the first: appetite failed after 6 mo. [months]. For 9 wks .[weeks] before admission she suffered from pains on movement about the hips and coccyx. For 6, she had felt her legs numb, and the ground appeared soft under her feet, giving way where they were panted, and rising up again as they were lifted. For five weeks she had been in bed, unable to walk at all'
