He was in bed for 6 or 8 weeks: oedema of the legs was a prominent symptom. Eighteen months before his admission he began to suffer from pricking pain at the lower part of his abdomen on the left side. A swelling was soon afterwards noticed at the seat of the pain’

His recti muscles contracted when he was examined, and no abdominal tumour was found’
