Medical notes: 'This patient stated that he had always enjoyed excellent health with the exception of an attack of fever some years ago, for which he was admitted into St Bartholomew’s. The previous day he was quite well, & dined heartily off boiled mutton, & took beef at supper time. At 11 o’clock he went to bed & slept soundly until 2 or 3 when he woke complaining of cramp, & pain in the bowels. He soon became very sick & was violently purged. He was seen by a medical man but took no medicine until he came to the hospital’
