Medical notes: 'History. Mother d. [died] of consumption: previous history of good health. Quite well till noon on the 7th day before admission: when she was noticed to have a troublesome cough. Towards evening she seemed to be struggling to spit something up and during the night there was severe dyspnoea with marked stridor. Next day all the symptoms were somewhat relieved. During the night they again became severe. On the 3rd day all symptoms had disappeared except a slight cough: she ate with a good appetite. This state of things continued till the 6th. On the 6th she complained of sore throat. The night before admn [admission] the severe dyspnoea and stridor returned, continued all night and part of the next morning, then lessened: as she was being brought up in a cab, these were hardly noticeable, but seemed to return on admission. No nasal discharge or swelling in the neck noticed'
