Medical notes: 'A married woman who had miscarried, as she believed, in the 6th month of pregnancy on the 4th June, which was followed in a few days by intense pain in the abdomen, described as ‘inflammation’ which had been in the first instance accompanied by constipation followed by diarrhoea; 2 or 3 days later, pain began in the calf of the left leg, with some swelling there’

Medical notes: 'This girl, whose breathing was very oppressed, and skin dusky & congested, stated that her illness had commenced with what she called a pleuritic fever 5 weeks before. She alleged that she had had no illness within her recollection previously, with the exception of hooping cough [whooping cough] 7 years before. She was very low & depressed & it was impossible to get any distinct account of her symptoms & she was also very deaf which she had not been previous’
