The sore extended, and neighbouring parts of the skin became black and gangrenous. These ultimately coalesced and the sloughing extended to the deeper structures so that on admission nearly all the soft tissues of the great toe had sloughed away leaving the phalanges exposed'

Medical notes: 'About 2 years ago when feeling in very good health he passed a large quantity of water with much dark, reddish brown sediment & no pain; no oedema; went on with his work for a few days; urine constantly contained similar sediment or clots of blood. Some pain in left hypochondrium & lumbar region grew upon him: much aggravated by lifting a weight. He was laid up for 2 months, the blood gradually disappearing from the water. No oedema, no vomiting. Appetite fairly good. He was able to go on with his work, without haematuria, but with occasional lumbar aching till the same symptoms reappeared at Xmas 1880 & he laid up during Jan & Feb 1881'

She was treated in St Thomas' Hospital & received much relief: came out in 6 weeks with pain in left iliac region at times, which was increased by exercise. After a fortnight she was engaged as kitchenmaid at St George's Hospital and was laid up with scalded hand. The urine was then found to contain both blood & pus. The discharge of blood ceased after a few days in bed'

During the summer he felt very chilly & lost his appetite. Stopped work in September feeling very weak: no vomiting. Oedema noticed a fortnight before admission first in the face, then spreading to the legs. During the last 6 days has had 4 convulsions'
