Medical notes: 'This patient was admitted with a scrotal hernia of the left side of 17 years’ duration, never wholly reducible. He had always worn a truss which had prevented the hernia increasing in size until the 3rd of May, when he observed it rather larger than usual, but free form pain. In the evening of the 3rd he had vomiting once, & the bowels acted scantily on the following morning; & then, not again till the evening of the 7th, by injection’
