Medical notes: 'Jane Newmarch was admitted to the hospital complaining of cough and weakness. She had had a cough for as long as she could remember, and does not know what brought it on in the first instance; did not think she had ever had any acute disease – or pneumonia – in association with it. For the past year the sputum had been very copious and offensive to the taste, and was brought up in great quantities of a morning. Her general health had been fairly well maintained until 6 months before the present time; she then had a miscarriage, which left her weakened and with a worse cough. On June 22nd she was seized with pain in the R. [Right] chest, made worse on deep inspiration, but this pain has now vanished. She had noted deformity of the fingers and wrists for a long time, and attributed it to washing up things in water. Occasionally she had headache: there were no indications of brain-abscess. Married, one healthy child aet 2 ½, one miscarriage. She knew of no consumption in her family'
