He dated these symptoms from the preceding Dec. [December] when he first noticed soreness of the throat, with pain on swallowing, and soreness of the abdomen. He also had rather severe epistaxis, which for a time recurred frequently and was somewhat intractable'

Medical notes: 'Patient was admitted unconscious having fallen out of a loft on to her head and L [Left] shoulder. She was bleeding from the nose and L [Left] ear and the haemorrhage from the ear continued somewhat profusely for the next 48 hours. The condition of unconsciousness continued for about the same time and gradually passed off giving place to marked restlessness. The bleeding from the ear was then replaced by a fairly free watery blood stained discharge which continued for several days and the patient's general condition improved considerably and she was able to take some interest in her surroundings. The facial paralysis had become absolute and remained so'
