Medical notes: 'History. Patient walked into surgery, stating that he had 'a tonsil on the end of the tongue' which caused abdominal pain and vomiting. In reality he was suffering from acute intestinal obstruction of 4 days standing. He was in good health until Sept. [September] 19th: then colicky abdominal pain came on, being felt mostly in the flanks. On the 22nd, he began to vomit, and vomiting continued being progressive in character (bilious [to] stercoraceous). Absolute constipation, both as regards faeces and flatus since the 23rd. No enemata used: medicine administered, but invariably vomited'

Medical notes: 'Patient admitted for severe facial neuralgia which commenced 3 years ago, and started in the L. [Left] eye itself subsequently spreading to the branches of the L. [Left] nasal nerve. The pain was spasmodic and very severe – the spasms lasting about 10 minutes and L. [Left] side of the face remained tender for the whole day afterwards. All carious teeth were removed 1 year ago but with no benefit. No medicines have relieved her for any length of time. Of late besides frequent spasms in the course of the nasal nerve, there has been pain referred to the supra and intra orbital nerves. No pain about lachrymal or temporomolar or on any branch of the 3rd division'
