Medical notes: 'The patient’s father had gout. The man said he had suffered from rheumatism, and that he was first laid up with it 30 years before he came to the hospital, and was ill for 2 months. He had many attacks and the last was in January 1888. There was some doubt as to the nature of the attacks from which he suffered; it seemed likely that they were gout. His big toe, he said, was always first affected, and was red and shiny. He was a considerable drinker of beer. His average was half a gallon a day, and on festive occasions he drank more’
