Medical notes: 'The boy had had two attacks of rheumatic fever, the first 2 years, the second one year before he came to St George’s. He gave no history of earlier complications during the attacks. He had not had chorea. He began to suffer from cough and dyspnoea and went to the Victoria Hospital for Children where mitral disease was diagnosed. He was treated with digitalis’
