Medical notes: 'He had no illnesses as a boy, no scarlet fever. He went to sea at 17 in the East India Company's service; had dysentery in Calcutta at 22 (1859). For a year he describes himself as passing blood & slime nearly every day and for 4 years afterwards was subject to frequent attacks of dysenteric diarrhoea: no such symptoms since then. He has been a very heavy drinker of spirits, especially 1858-1870 when he had much morning vomiting & depression. In 1864 he settled in England as a confectioner. About 1873 he began to be subject to severe headaches with 'blinding pain' generally relieved by vomiting'

Medical notes: He was a man of average strength, and enjoyed excellent health till two and a half years ago when he changed his occupation of a bricklayer’s labourer for that of a cat’s meat man, on account of failing strength. The weakness increased, and for eighteen months he had been suffering from shortness of breath, epigastric discomfort and flatulence.

Medical notes: On November 5th he complained of feeling cold and of pain in one side but there was no rigor. He took to bed the next day, and was a little light headed on November 8th. On November 9th he came up to the hospital with signs at the right apex resembling those of phthisis.
