Album labelled 'Career' containing photographs featuring or relating to St George's nurse Jean Meadows (née Veronica Jean Cruise), including scenes of nurses, wards, Christmas festivities, royal visits, etc. Also includes press cuttings about visits by two different Duchesses of Kent (Princess Marina and Katharine) and an inserted certificate of completion of the St George's tuberculosis nursing course (1957).

Two yellow Kodak boxes containing individual black and white portrait photographs of two sets of student nurses, as well as a few black and white and colour group shots for comparison. The nurses in box 1 are wearing legible name badges, which has made it possible to date their year of entry to 1973 (by cross-referencing with the lists in NU/1/1/19); the nurses in box 2 are not wearing such badges, but from their similar appearance seem to date from the same time period.

Note that this image dates from before the Grove was absorbed into St George's in the 1950s (but after it had dropped the 'Fever' from its original name of Grove Fever Hospital); for later images of the Grove site in its St George's era, see NU/6/2/1/6.

Black and white and colour photographs of groups of student/pupil nurses and staff at St James' Hospital (excluding those taken at prizegivings, for which see NU/6/2/5/4), including photographs featuring cast members of the BBC nursing soap opera 'Angels', which was filmed at the hospital. Also includes an early sepia image (c. 1910s-1920s?) which is not explicitly labelled as St James', but was stored with the rest of this material.

Collection charting the development of nursing education at St George's and related institutions from the 19th century to the present day.

The collection includes:

• Student registers, training and examination records, prospectuses and syllabuses
• Administrative records, including committee minutes, reports, rules and regulations
• Publications and printed material including books, newsletters and journals
• Papers, photographs and artefacts from St George’s Nurses’ League
• Personal papers, memoirs and memorabilia from individual nurses, including papers of matron Dame Muriel Powell (c.1910s-­1970s)
• Photographs, including student photographs, group photographs and personal photo albums
• Artefacts and objects, including items of nurses' uniform, badges, medals, and medical instruments
• ‘Nurses’ Voices’ oral history project: interviews with over 100 former St George’s nurses and midwives (and related documentation), recorded 2003-2008

From in-­job training at the hospital, nursing education was gradually formalised during the latter half of the 19th century. From 1882 onwards, probationer nurses were offered lectures by the medical school and hospital staff; these lectures developed into a more formal syllabus, becoming compulsory for probationers in the 1890s, and the first formal examinations were introduced in 1894. The archive charts the development of nursing education from the late 19th century to the 21st century, including important changes in the demographics of the nursing staff, such as the arrival of the Windrush generation.

The collection encompasses training of nurses at St George’s and related institutions: for instance, nursing training at Victoria Hospital for Children and Grove Hospital were merged with St George’s School of Nursing in the 1950s, leading to the establishment of a branch of the School of Nursing at Tooting, where St George’s Hospital and Medical School (later university) moved in the 1970s from Hyde Park Corner, central London.

Brown album – inscribed on the inside cover '"Jacques", with love, 1934' – containing black and white/sepia photographs apparently taken or collected by Clara Jeynes, who trained as a nurse at St George's. Includes images (with handwritten captions) of St George's Hospital (including theatres), Hyde Park, Princess Mary's Wedding Day (1922), the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley (1924), other workplaces in Walsall and Southport, and various personal photographs (including a group labelled 'Memories of Surrey Sundays'), a few of which have been inserted loose.

Black and white and colour portrait photographs of nurses and doctors, either solo or in pairs, including head shots of matron Dorothy Morris, surgeon David Caro and 'Mr Alexander', and a series of photos featuring a male and a female student nurse (A. J. Neary and M. A. Vento) that according to one of the labels was taken for use in a promotional brochure (c.1973). Some of the images are mounted or printed on board.

Black and white (and a few colour) photographs of prizegiving ceremonies (and presentations of certificates) at St James' Hospital, including shots of nurses collecting prizes, speeches being made, and groups of attendees dressed up for the occasion. Also includes discrete booklet and 'Nursing Times Photographs' wallet containing photos for the 1961 and 1963 prizegivings respectively.
