Medical notes: 'This girl was a servant. She considered herself to be righthanded. She had scarlatina in childhood, never chorea; and her only attack of rheumatism (with the exception of slight rheumatic pains a few days before admission) occurred in November 1890 and confined her to bed for 6 weeks. She appeared to have recovered fair health and returned to work. On March 2nd at 1pm while eating her dinner she suddenly became paralysed on the right side. There was no pain in the head, no loss of consciousness and no loss of speech'

Medical notes: The case is accompanied by an article published in the Edinburgh Medical Journal in 1898. 'The patient […] was a strong and burly man, aet. 32, who on the 2nd December 1897, while travelling in the train to London from the North of England, was seized with violent abdominal pain. He did not pass any water after this time, though a couple of ounces of albuminous urine were drawn off by catheter. It appeared that after his arrival in London he was treated by a doctor for renal disease or colic. He came up to St. George's Hospital late on the night of the 3rd December, and was at once admitted by Mr S. Smith, house physician, who found him collapsed, with a distended abdomen'

The sputum, at first scanty, became gradually profuse. No pain was complained of and no haemoptysis occurred. She had lost flesh. There was no definite 'specific' history. She had been I.P. [In-patient] here in '96 and '97 [1896 and 1897] for a 'bad leg'. There was nothing of importance in his family history'
