Five weeks before admission he noticed a fullness of the head and throat with blueness on stooping, and dyspnoea on exertion'

Some pain in left hypochondrium & lumbar region grew upon him: much aggravated by lifting a weight. He was laid up for 2 months, the blood gradually disappearing from the water. No oedema, no vomiting. Appetite fairly good. He was able to go on with his work, without haematuria, but with occasional lumbar aching till the same symptoms reappeared at Xmas 1880 & he laid up during Jan & Feb 1881'
