Medical notes: 'The child was admitted with a history of two days' illness which commenced with the occurrence of pustules? On the face. These increased in size and a swelling was noticed on the outer side of the right foot. […] On Sept [September] 1st a detailed note was made on the condition of the skin: - 'Skin condition is polymorphic. It affects mainly face, neck, chest and thighs. It consists chiefly of large bullae in all stages. No actual pustules. Some patches of indurated erythema. No eruption around mouth or anus or on buttocks, or on palms of hands or soles of feet. Probably simple Pemphigus'. The Dermatologist saw the child on Sep. [September] 5 and expressed the opinion that the eruption was not syphilitic but a Pemphigus Neonatorum of Streptococcal origin'

Medical notes: 'Always healthy before the present illness – 8 mos [months] ago taken ill with pains in back, loins and abdomen. He then had 'influenza' with a high temperature and Bronchitis. He got better and returned to work, but soon had to give it up as pains returned and has done no work for past six months. The chief character of the pains are their shifting nature, rarely remaining long in one place. Everything negative as regards physical examinations, except a persistent phosphaturia. After a time pains became more constant and have remained so. They are now localised to both loins and the abdomen. During the last month albumen has appeared in the urine and patient has been getting much weaker. He has been lying in bed for some weeks movement being impossible'
