History

Born in Canterbury. Moved to Edinburgh to live with his uncle James Gregory after his father’s death in 1803. Studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh 1806-1809.

Student at St George’s and the Windmill Street School of Medicine. MD from the University of Edinburgh 1811. MRCS 1812.

Assistant surgeon to the British army in the Mediterranean in 1813. Retired at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Lecturer in medicine at the Windmill Street School of Medicine and St Thomas’s Hospital. Physician to the Smallpox and Vaccination Hospital from 1824 and to the General Dispensary. Licentiate and fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.

Died at Camden Square, London 25 Jan 1853.
