In Dec '98 [December 1898] he caught a chill. Which intensified the symptoms, went to bed and had been laid up since – Oedema of legs, penis and scrotum for a fortnight. Intemperate for many years, chiefly beer and gin. Rh. F. [Rheumatic Fever] in 1870. Σ [Syphilis] in '73 [1873]. Nothing else noteworthy'
