Born in Yorkshire.

Student at St George's Hospital Medical School. Assisted Henry Gray in the preparation of the first edition of his 'Anatomy'. House surgeon 1858. Qualified in 1859.

FRCS 1871. House surgeon at the Yorkshire County Hospital. Surgeon at the Yorkshire County Prison. Assistant surgeon at the Victoria Hospital for Children, London. Consulting surgeon in Curzon Street, Mayfair, London. Secretary of the Anthropometrical Committee of the British Association alongside Francis Galton. Editor of the Selborne Society's Magazine. His publications include 'A Manual of Anthropometry, or a Guide to the Physical Examination and Measurement of the Human Body' (1878), 'The Physical Requirements of Factory Children (1876), 'Eyesight of Savage and Civilized People' (1886) and 'The Medical Inspection and Physical Education of Secondary Schools. Reports of the Royal Commission on Secondary Education' (1895).

Married and moved from London to Eastbourne; died in Tunbridge Wells.
