Medical notes: 'The father of this man died of mitral stenosis in this hospital in 1875. The patient was a labourer who had worked much with lead, especially during the last 2 years of his life. There was no history of scarlatina or rheumatism. In 1876 he contracted a chancre which was followed by ulceration of the throat and a scaly skin eruption. For this he took no medicine'
